high speed extreme + linksys wrt54g router = slowww help?

i got internet highspeed extreme, when i plug my pc directly in my modem i get a send/ received speed both are in the 10 didgets number. i bought a router (linksys wrt54g) and my send/receive speed are in the 7 didget number :S i also get higher latency/ping when im conected to the router in games like couterstrike wow age of conan ect. i payed about 50$ for the router i know it cheap....is the problem in my router settings if so please tell me how to fix it or if i need to get a better gaming router in the 200$ and more please post back

What kind of router is it, i.e. speed?It's about how fast the router can go, it can only go as fast as it's meant to go. You can have the fastest internet ever but it's only gonna go throug the router so fast.

How fast is your internet? I suspect that's the limiting factor with you, as with most people.1. plug directly into the modem and go to http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest and see how fast your connection is.2. connect wirelessly and go to http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest and see how fast it is.If wireless is a lot slower try changing channels on your wireless router, move closer, and move the router away from electronics, metal, and up as high as you can. Cordless phones at 2.4Ghz (cheapest and most common) completely destroy wireless data signals so that could be the problem too...get 5.8Ghz instead.I don't understand your 10-digit and 7-digit numbers, it doesn't make sense. I suspect this is some sort of data transfer amount, not speed.
